Dear Friend:

Leaders tell us who they are by who, and what, they prioritize.  The Greensboro Police Department recently released crime statistics showing a 64% increase in aggravated assaults involving firearms this year.  In just sixteen hours on Saturday police responded to three shootings and an assault with a hammer.  This week the Mayor called a work session of the City Council.

To discuss parking.

The Mayor hastily called today’s work session after a well-connected developer spoke up about issues he was having with parking.  I share his concerns, and believe he is well within his rights to raise the issue.  As someone who has called repeatedly for work sessions focused on the wave of violence, I wish the Mayor was as responsive to us. 

A Council under my leadership would work differently:  

• To solve problems, we will be honest about what the data says even when it is not the picture we wish for.
• Monthly meetings for key topics like public safety and transportation will be set in advance with clear agendas.
• And we will end business as usual where insiders are prioritized.  

We cannot hide from public meetings and working on hard topics.  It is our job to regularly ensure that the Greensboro Police Department has the tools, training, and support it needs for us to be a safer and more equitable City.
